Competition grows as more automakers enter plan

Washington, DC – April 1, 2020 – More than 18 thousand hydrogen fuel cell vehicles have been sold since their commercial sales began in 2014, says Information Trends, aresearch company that tracks energy and automotive markets. Almost 42 percent of the sales took place in 2019, marking a turning point in the uptake of these vehicles.

In a comprehensive study, Global Market for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles, Information Trends says that fuel cell vehicles are being sold in 20 countries, and automakers are poised to launch these vehicles in China and Brazil.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are based on one of the most viable technologies capable of achieving significant long-term reductions in carbon dioxide emissions, said Naqi Jaffery, the lead author of the study.

A hydrogen fueling infrastructure is beginning to take shape, and the costs of these vehicles are declining, Jaffery said. Both of these factors are helping accelerate the sales of these vehicles, he added.

Automakers that have launched hydrogen fuel cell vehicles include Hyundai, Toyota, Honda. Upcoming rollout of these vehicles by German automakers, BMW and Volkswagen, and Chinese automakers, SAIC and Grove, will give additional impetus to the growth of these vehicles, the study said.

As compared to other regions, more hydrogen fuel cell vehicles were sold in APAC in 2019, reversing the trend of the previous two years when more of these vehicles were sold in the U.S., the study said. The highest growth in 2019 occurred in Korea where Nexo has been in high demand.

This study from Information Trends is one of the most comprehensive analytical assessments of the market for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The 155-page study contains 62 tables, charts and graphs.
